MAY I add a few more historical facts to those given by Anne Lomax (Israel's history lesson, Postbag May 8)?
With the ending of WW2 came the beginning of the first post-war conflict.

From 1945 to 1948 the United Kingdom's Armed Forces fought a war against terrorism in Palestine. The terrorists were the Jewish 'Irgun Zwai Leumi', 'Stern Gang' and the Haganah.

It was a war in which we fought a merciless foe with 'one hand tied behind our back'.

It was a war in which we did everything our 'king and country' asked of us.

It was a war we came back from, unwelcomed and unthanked.

Since then, for whatever reason, and unlike other wars, the 'Palestine Conflict' has all too often gone unmentioned and unlisted by broadcasters and newspapers at Remembrance Time.

The war we fought has become a largely forgotten war.

It was a war that claimed the lives of 784 members of the UK's Armed Forces.
