I AM writing to express some reservations about the sandstone (not granite) cross which has appeared in front of the Jodrell Arms, Whaley Bridge.
Firstly, we already have a war memorial in the town, so why was a second one necessary? Secondly, it looks odd. There is something about the scale, size and position of the monument which just doesn't look right. Thirdly, and most importantly, why does a war memorial have to be a cross, representing just one religion? Those who sacrificed their lives in war, and those who respect their memory, come from all religions and from none at all. This fact was acknowledged after the Great War, when memorials were erected in the form of obelisks and cenotaphs, styles not associated with one particular, or any religious creed. In this respect Whaley Bridge seems to be at least 80 years behind current opinion.

PS: These reservations do not extend to planned development of the Jodrell Arms, where I wish them well.
