Closures have stamp of EU

Further to recent letters and the article "A War of Words over Post Offices" in your paper, may I suggest that members of the three main political parties stop trying to pass the buck to each other and own up to their collective responsibility for the present situation.
All three parties have voted to implement EU directives that would inevitably lead to closures, so how can they now purport to keep offices open?

In November 2007, under an agreement with our Foreign Secretary David Milliband, EU Commissioner Neelie Kroes said that Post Offices Ltd. must reduce the size of the network by about 2,500 branches. In return, our government received approval to continue its subsidies to the rest of the network although it was not allowed to increase them.

Before there are further promises about consultation periods, calls for petitions or demands for a halt to closures, perhaps we can be told the truth.

Many Post Offices WILL close because the government has an obligation to close them.
