SMALL businesses face an increasingly uncertain future, along with the millions of people they employ. They are finding it more difficult and more expensive to access finance, and the banks are doing little to help.
Our members are caught between rising overheads, late payments and their banks manager's cold shoulder. As a consequence, forty businesses are closing every day and we have not yet reached the nadir of this economic downturn.

The Federation of Small Businesses is proposing a Small Business Survival Fund to help otherwise healthy businesses through these difficult times. The fund, worth £1billion, would draw on money from the European Investment Bank and be distributed as loans through the emda Regional Development Agency.

This is a practical proposal that could be implemented now and save businesses and many more jobs in Derbyshire from going to the wall. We strongly urge the government to adopt our proposal in the forthcoming Pre-Budget Report.

Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire
