During a recent radio discussion regarding the wonderful performance of our athletes in Bejing the question "could anyone think of a new event that could be introduced in time for 2012" was raised and it made me start to think that there is one – but it wouldn't make the 2012 Olympics.
The event I have in mind is held each evening and every weekend on Harpur Hill Road – the 200 metre pedestrian dash. To partake in this event you have to be fit, agile and very, very brave as each journey as a pedestrian between the junctions of Sherbrook and Berwick Road means taking your life into your hands, as drivers ignoring the road closed and access for residents only signs whiz up and down making no allowance for the fact that the up-side of the road along with the footpath no longer exists.

Some athletes are handicapped to slow their progress down and have small children, buggies and dogs to make the chance of getting to the other side even more difficult. I'm not exactly sure how the medals work – if the gold goes to the pedestrian with the most successful journeys, or it goes to the first driver who injures or kills a pedestrian; perhaps High Peak Borough Council or Flynn Utilities would like to make that decision and perform the presentation.

Very fed-up (but still alive at the time of writing) Harpur Hill Pedestrian
