Witchcraft comes to the villages
FIVE Peak District villages, one of its towns and a stately home are associated with witchcraft claims.
Youlgrave, Tideswell, Winster, Tansley, and Over Haddon have been named, as well as Bakewell and Chatsworth House itself.
But do not fear, the area is not reverting to the dark ages. A unique project, developed by Peacock Players (Bakewell) and made possible by them and Tideswell Community Players, has led to a major collaboration between members of various local theatre and other individuals.
They are bringing a professionally directed production of Arthur Miller's famous play, The Crucible, to the stage. Performed by the newly formed Chatsworth Players, the director is Sheffield Theatres' Sylvia Jackson. Touring the area from yesterday it culminates in a sold out) gala performance at the restored theatre at Chatsworth House on May 14.
This play uses wild allegations of witchcraft in 17th century Salem, Massachusetts as a parallel to the persecution and hysteria of the 1950's US 'witchhunts' against communist spies, led by Senator Robert McCarthy, but with themes all too familiar today.
A group of young girls spread rumours that there are witches at work in the village. Soon the whole community is scared. No one is safe.
One girl – played by Rachel Moore – manipulates everyone, even the court.
The play starts its tour in Youlgrave before moving to Tideswell tonight (Thurs), Winster tomorrow, Tansley (May 10), Over Haddon (May 11), Bakewell (May 12-13) and finally Chatsworth House (May 14).
* All performances start at 7:30pm. Tickets are £6 (£10 at Chatsworth). Bookings: Tideswell, 01298 871063; Winster, 01629 650549; Tansley, 01629 584410; Over Haddon, 01629 812133.
