HAYFIELD'S May Queen Festival is sure to have a cosmopolitan feel with Countries of the World the theme for this year's event on Saturday, May 10.
Shops and businesses join in the fun by decorating their premises, while a host of colourful costumes and floats are expected to take part in the Grand Procession.

The crowds who gather to watch the event will be entertained from 12.45pm to 1.15pm by Thornsett Brass Band who will play at The Royal Hotel, and Hayfield Morris Men will dance throughout the village.

Then at 1.30pm the Grand Procession will wind its way through the village with bands taking part set to include Thornsett Band, The Boy's Brigade, New Mills Brass Band, Samba Blox and the Northenden Pipe Band.

Also on parade are Urban Gypsies (soon to be seen on Britain's Got Talent) the Billerettes, Harvey Davidson motorcycles, Nordmanni Viking and Saxon re-enactment group, Chadkirk Dog Display Team and even stilt walkers.

Attention will then turn to the May Queen Field where a host of events are to take place including the Crowning of the 2008 Queen Kayleigh who will be joined by Princess Laura and Rosebud Sheridan.

On Sunday, May 11, at 5.40pm a small procession complete with band will leave the May Queen's home on Highfield Road for St Matthew's Church for a service of thanks.

Monday sees the Hayfield royalty visit the fair.

A Pet Show will be held on Wednesday, May 14 starting at 6.30pm on the May Queen Field. The show is organised by Roy Hulme. Entry is 30p per class.

Friday is the Fell Race starting at 7.30pm from the May Queen Field.

Rounding off the week is a children's disco on Saturday, May 17 from 7pm to 9pm in the Royal Hotel, £2.
