TRIBUTES have been paid this week to a former High Peak Mayor and Labour stalwart John Francis, 83, who died at his Gamesley home on Friday.
A member of High Peak Borough Council for Gamesley from 1976 until 2003, he was Deputy Mayor from 1992 to 1993 and Mayor from 1993 to 1994.

High Peak MP Tom Levitt said: "He was truly a wonderful man and a real pillar of his community. He was committed, caring and anxious to serve. All of us in the Labour Party will miss his encouragement – and his advice."

Leader of the Labour Group on High Peak Borough Council, Councillor Caitlin Bisknell said: "John Francis was a very special person – a great character who was a tremendous advocate for the community of Gamesley and the Labour Party. Personally I will always remember him most for that mischievous twinkle in his eye.

"He will be greatly missed by all who knew him and those whose lives he touched; Gamesley and High Peak are the poorer today.

"Our heartfelt sympathies go to Norah and all his family.

"Put very simply – they simply don't make them like John anymore," said Cllr Bisknell.

The funeral service will take place at Dinting Church on Monday, May 12 at 10.45am.
