AFTER recent soakings the large crowds who gathered to watch this year's Hayfield May Queen were more likely to be suffering from heatstroke.

The parade with a 'countries of the world' theme certainly took on a cosmopolitan atmosphere with the narrow village streets packed with residents and visitors.

May Queen Secretary Barbara Ramwell said: "It was very good – at last the weather was what we wanted. It was a great day and we had a really good crowd and it all went just right."

"We would like to thank everyone for decorating the village and for making all the scarecrows. We would like to say a really big thank you to everyone who helped on the day.

"Fingers cross for next year," she added.

Brazil, Mexico, an African safari, Hawaii and China complete with a dragon provided the inspiration for entries in the colourful parade.

Regular favourites were joined this year by Nordmanni, a Viking and Saxon re-enactment group.

On the field, events continued with fun fair, and the crowning of the 2008 Rose Queen Kayleigh who was accompanied by Princess Laura and Rosebud Sheridan.

Sunday saw a second, shorter procession through the village by the royalty for a church service at St Matthews, and on Wednesday the popular Pet Show was set to take place.

Events still come include the Fell Race tomorrow night (Friday) and a Children's Disco on Saturday.
