Strictly great fun as dance stars hit town
The 'Anniversary Waltz' was a fitting soundtrack to a weekend of dance for golden wedding couple Geoff and Irene Dakin.
They revisited the early days of their romance, which began with a dance at the Buxton Pavilion, as guests of a gala ball and weekend of tuition featuring stars of "Strictly Come Dancing" Ian Waite and Camilla Dallerup.
The couple, from Peak Dale, were presented with the treat by their daughter, Jeanette Webb, who won the prize in a Buxton Advertiser competition run in conjunction with event organisers Midlands Dance Events.
It comprised tuition sessions that formed part of a residential holiday break at the Palace Hotel and Saturday night spectacular at the Octagon ballroom which drew in local dancers and spectators.
The night featured a Latin American cabaret by the TV dancers who were supported by one of country's leading amateur competitive ballroom partnerships, Richard Still and Morgan Hemphill, of Lichfield.
Organiser Nick Gallagher-Hughes, of MDE, said that Geoff and Irene were a welcome addition to the party.
"They are such a charming couple whose romance blossomed on the dance floor more than 50 years ago. It is very apt that they should celebrate their marriage in the surroundings which initially brought them together.
"The weekend was a resounding success and Buxton was the ideal location. We had guests from as far a field as Kent, Cardiff, Liverpool and Ludlow and they were delighted with the town and its surrounding attractions."
The ball also saw another partnership stepping out on the right foot. Brother and sister Jake and Fiona Beck, aged 12 and ten, of Monyash, clinched a social cha cha competition staged on the night. The youngsters have been dancing for three years.
