First Buxton Sports Awards
THE FIRST of what will become the annual Buxton Sports Awards took place at the University of Derby Buxton on Thursday.
The awards were attended by sports men and women, coaches, administrators and supporters from Buxton and the Surrounding areas. Steve Vernon and Richard Gartside were the masters of ceremony for evening with Councillor Andrew Bingham presenting the major awards.

Winner: Buxton Junior Football Club
Buxton Juniors run 16 teams for boys and girls from ages 8 – 16 with annual camps in partnership with Football in the Community Programmes. They undertake regular tours overseas taking part in competitions and tournaments.
They hold FA Charter Mark Status, and play an active role in Football development groups across the High Peak

Winner - Jan Melland
Jan first got involved in football and with Buxton Juniors FC ten years ago through her son's and daughter's involvement in football. As her daughter expressed more of an interest in football at Harpur Hill Primary School in Buxton, Jan increasingly became more involved.
Initially her involvement in the Club was as a supportive parent helping with fundraising events, but this soon led to her helping with the development of girls' teams.
Before long, Jan was on the coaching ladder, successfully completing her Junior Team Manager's Award and she has gone on from strength to strength.
She currently coaches three girls' teams for Buxton Juniors and is also the player registrar for the Derbyshire Girls League, the league that the girls play their competitive football in.
This means that Jan is regularly out up to four evenings per week with training and meeting commitments, and most weekends through the football season when games are played.
Jan also supports girls' football in partnership with the Sports Development Officer in High Peak and is always willing to offer advice to clubs looking to develop girls' football.
Community Coach of the Year Supported by "Sportstrain" for a qualified coach who has made a major contribution to the lives of people through their coaching.

Winner - Alice Wright.
Alice has supported the development of a Boccia group at Buxton University. Thanks to her commitment and enthusiasm the students are now participating on a regular basis. She has given up her time to ensure that people with disabilities have the opportunities to access new sports.
Alice has become the voice of inclusion for people with disabilities, always ensuring that the needs of all are considered.
She also leads research across the University of Derby Buxton on participation and integration of people with disabilities.
School Sports Person of the Year, supported by High Peak School Sports Partnership.
Winner - Laura Morris
Laura show high levels of commitment to school sport, in particular netball.
She is active as both a player and mentor to younger students.
In addition to her school sport Laura must regularly travel to Loughborough to attend the East Midland Development Squad.
Laura is active in all school sport while still maintaining her academic school work.
