BUXTON's new police Superintendent took up his post just over 100 days ago. He is Paul Rouse, and he comes with a background in both the uniform branch and CID.
Before coming to Buxton, he was responsible for Operations at Derbyshire Constabulary's headquarters at Ripley, looking after the helicopter, armed response vehicles, dog section and the task force.

And prior to this, he was one of the force's Senior Investigating Offices (SIO), with several successful murder investigations to his name.

Here he talks about settling into his new role in Buxton, and the challenges that lie ahead.

What do you think of Buxton and what do you aim to achieve in your time here?

"I came to the Force four years ago from London and was made extremely welcomed by everyone. This has continued with the people of Buxton Division who have made me feel very much at home. What I'd like to do is to carry on the good work that is done by all the staff, and with some fresh ideas, to make some improvements to how we serve the public on the Division."

It is a big Division, stretching from Ashbourne in the south to Glossop in the north. How have you found the policing challenges in such a big area?

"The Division is big, covering over 500 square miles – half of the Force area – with six policing sections and quite low officer numbers to deal with all the calls for service. It is a challenge, but there are some fantastic people who work for us on the Division, all with one thing in mind, to do their best to reduce crime and to lock up those responsible."

What approach have you taken to your new role?

"Like any new job it takes time to turn information into knowledge. I've done this by getting out and about to meet as many staff as I can and to see what their problems are and what we are doing well. I have found people to be very open and to give their views on what can be done to improve things. From this I will build sustainable processes to improve policing services for the people of this part of Derbyshire."
