CLASSIC childhood books were brought to life in one of the largest and most entertaining parades seen in New Mills for many years.

With colourful floats and walking groups as well as decorated shops, everyone played their part – inspired by the children's literature theme.

Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was recreated by New Mills Primary while St Mary's Primary School focused on Bedtime Stories.

For Newtown Primary, Charles Dickens' Oliver was the theme – while Thornsett School went Around the World in 80 Days and Springfield House Day Nursery recreated Peter Pan.

The Swizzels Matlow float decorated with scenes from Alice in Wonderland was among the most popular – especially with the generous helpings of sweets that made their way to the youngsters who lined the route.

The Urban Gypsies tribal belly-dancing group may not have made the final of ITV's Britain's Got Talent, but they certainly wowed the crowds dancing to the sound of samba performed by Hey! Samba.

The procession was full of music provided by local band The Lynk, the Chesterfield Musketeers, the Anvil Street Drummers, United Co-op New Mills Band and Hazel Grove Brass Band. Also making plenty of noise was a fleet of Harley Davidson motorbikes.

At the Fete Field, crowds were treated to an equally impressive range of entertainment: a birds of prey flying display, numerous stalls, trade stands, a bar, a very popular fun fair and the crowning of this year's New Mills Royalty – Queen Nyree Watkin, Junior Queen Danielle Jones, Princess Ellie Goodwin, Rosebud Sophie Gilman and Personality Rosebud Alissa Jones.

The good weather helped ensure large crowds lined the route and the collection during the parade, totalling £1,358, was the largest the event has ever received.

Organisers would like to thank all those who contributed to the collection, everyone who took part, the businesses and organisations who supported the event and all those who helped out behind the scenes.
