Safety call after Disley lorry crash

A LORRY driver had a lucky escape when his goods vehicle overturned along a busy stretch of the A6 near Lyme Park, Disley.
The DAF articulated lorry left the road and ended up on its side on the pavement, opposite the Buxton Road West junction with Park Road, shortly after 5pm.
A spokesperson for Cheshire Constabulary said: "There was some disruption to traffic, although the road remained open under traffic direction until about 10.40pm. No injuries were reported.
"The road was then completely closed to facilitate the recovery of the vehicle and repairs to a damaged lamppost and exposed cables. It fully re-opened at 4.40am the following morning."
Last Monday's accident occurred yards from the scene of a crash which claimed the life of Chapel-en-le-Frith sports star Oliver Everall in January 2007, and comes weeks after a lorry collided with safety barriers near the entrance to Lyme Park.
Campaigners are now calling for an integrated road safety strategy.
Former Disley councillor Mike Flynn said: "Over the years the stretch of the A6 in Disley/High Lane has become notorious for accidents.
"Most of them are not reported because they simply involve vehicles losing control on the bends and managing to drive away before they are struck by another vehicle, even when facing the wrong way on the wrong side of the road - which I have witnessed.
"The road is particularly dangerous at this point for HGV's to lose control.
"It is also hazardous for pedestrians, with the danger of getting showered by loose aggregate."
Mr Flynn recently raised a question at the Joint Highways Meeting of Macclesfield Borough Council and Cheshire County Council, calling for improved signage and an extension of the 30mph limit to encompass the bends near Lyme Park.
* Cheshire County Council were invited to comment, but had not replied as the Courier went to press.
