DISLEY and Newtown residents have rejected a proposal to transfer their area to Stockport Metropolitan Borough or High Peak Borough Councils.
Just under a quarter of the eligible electorate voted in a parish poll yesterday (Thursday).

Of the votes cast, 536 were against transferring Disley to Stockport from Cheshire East, while 288 supported the idea.

On the question of transferrin
g to High Peak Borough Council, 654 voters rejected the idea, while only 53 voters supported such a move.

The parish poll had been called by residents who felt the creation of the new Cheshire East unitary authority - which will take over all local government services in Macclesfield, Congleton, and Crewe and Nantwich from April 1 next year - would be a disaster for Disley and Newtown.

They exercised their rights under the Local Government Act 1972 to call for a vote on the issue.

Poll results

* Should Disley & Newtown be transferred to Stockport Metropolitan Borough rather than Cheshire East?

Yes - 288
No - 536

* Should Disley & Newtown be transferred to High Peak Borough (and Derbyshire County) rather than either Stockport Metropolitan Borough or Cheshire East?

Yes - 53
No - 654

Turnout: 23.96%
