A POLL on the future of local government in Disley and Newtown has been branded "meaningless and irresponsible" by the local Labour Party.
Residents have requested a vote on whether they should be governed by the new Cheshire East Council - or neighbouring Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council or High Peak Borough Council.
A Macclesfield Borough Council spokesman said: "We've receiv
ed a request for a referendum following a parish meeting. The poll will ask residents if they wish the parish of Disley including Newtown to transfer to the boroughs of Stockport or High Peak.
"Under the Local Government Act 1972, Macclesfield Borough Council now have up to 25 days to conduct the referendum and a date will be announced as soon as possible."
But Disley Labour Party believes residents have been misled into thinking the proposed vote will give them the alternative of being governed by another authority.
"In fact there is no possibility either now, or in the foreseeable future, of Disley being a part of anywhere other than Cheshire East," the party said in a statement.
"The Liberal Democrat proposal is meaningless and irresponsible as the referendum is likely to cost between £2,000 and £3,000; money which could be better spent on local amenities."
