Call for vote on Disley's future

A PUBLIC meeting has been called to decide whether or not to hold a poll on the future organisation of local government in Disley and Newtown.
At the meeting on Thursday April 3, in Disley Community Centre at 8pm, residents can decide if they want to have a vote on whether they are governed by the new Cheshire East Council or neighbouring Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council or High Peak Borough Council.
Cheshire East is the unitary authority which is poised to take over all local government services in Macclesfield, Congleton, and Crewe and Nantwich from April 1 next year.
But some residents believe this will be a disaster for Disley and Newtown, and have exercised their rights under the Local Government Act 1972 to call for a vote on the issue.
Speaking in the March edition of the Liberal Democrats' newsletter Focus, former Disley councillor Mike Flynn said: "In my opinion, based on over 30 years of experience of local government in Disley, the best option for Disley and Newtown residents is to join with Stockport.
"This makes much more sense than joining a provisional authority, currently being cobbled together from the corpses of previous authorities, and which links us with Crewe over 30 miles away."
