Two decades of displaying town heritage

TWENTY years ago New Mills Heritage and Information Centre first opened its doors to tell the story of New Mills' rich industrial history, its spectacular scenery and its vibrant community.

The project was part of the town and county council's efforts to improve the local environment, open up the magnificent Torrs Gorge and create a "Park Under the Town".

The official opening of the centre in 1989 was led by BBC Radio Four presenter the late Brian Redhead, Thornsett Band and the glorious New Mills steam roller. All the council and almost the entire town attended the celebrations.

The original exhibits are still in place and have been added to over the years.

A stunning illuminated model of the town in 1884 was built for the opening, and today it is as enthralling as it was when Brian Redhead saw it 20 years ago.

The 'coal mine' is also still there, so you can crawl down it and discover what life was like in the Victorian times for a poor trolley boy.

The centre has kept up to date, too. You can now get information on the famous Millennium Walkway or 'Archie', the first community owned Hydroelectric scheme in England, or search the new photo archive on computer.

The centre is crammed with information for locals and visitors. Looking for an interesting walk? Need a bus timetable? – New Mills Heritage Centre has it all and more.

Dedicated volunteers, some of them still there after 20 years' service, will welcome you with a smile, chat about the area, help you find information, or make you a cup of coffee. Entrance is still completely free.

The Heritage Centre is behind the bus station, open 11am-4pm every day, except Mondays, and 10.30am–4.30pm at weekends.
