Secrets and stories in a farmhouse

THE HISTORY hidden between the walls of a disused farmhouse near Whaley Bridge is being brought to life in a new exhibition.

Last November, the Advertiser published a letter from student Elizabeth Norman, who was researching the history of Bothomes Hall as part of her Fine Art degree at Staffordshire University.

Elizabeth explained: "I received many responses from people who either lived there, or remember it as a working farm."

Now, she has been invited to display a selection of her work on Bothomes Hall at Whaley Bridge Library. The exhibition opened last Friday and runs until October 28.

Elizabeth, with her fascination of old buildings and walls, was first drawn to the sad beauty of Bothomes Hall, and attempted to unearth some of its many memories.

As a photographer, she enjoyed capturing the textures which were found, the peeling paint, the layers of wallpaper and the scars on the walls.

"I feel as though there are so many secrets and stories hidden in these walls, and every mark or scratch in the wall gives a little more of the story away," she added.

Bothomes Hall, formerly a Dower house for the Lyme estate, was compulsory purchased 20 years ago as part of a road building scheme that was never completed.
