Flame which burned in Harpur for decades

Memories of an industrial giant which once dominated the skyline of Buxton have been sent in by a reader.

The Hoffman Kiln at Harpur Hill was built in 1872 to burn lime, the stone moving in a giant oval to keep a 24-hour a day production rate.

The fire inside burned continuously until 1944.

The kiln was crowned by its 170 feet high chimney, which was demolished in 1951.

The bottom part of the kiln was taken away in April 1980.

The kiln, reported to be the largest of its type, was a major employer, and some of the men who worked there are pictured below.
