Community spirit praised by police

HIGH Peak police are urging residents to continue to show community spirit and look out for their neighbours during the continuing cold weather.
Older or more vulnerable residents are particularly at risk as they may find it difficult to get out of the house for essential supplies and medication due to the slippery footpaths.
The snow last week closed schools, made roads impassable and saw bus services suspended as temperatures plummeted, and although no further snow has fallen the icy conditions continue to cause problems.
Safer Neighbourhood policing teams have been visiting elderly residents to make sure they are coping well during the cold spell, offering advice and referring them to partnership agencies if further help was needed.
Team Sergeant Tim Barlow said: “We have been delighted at the level of community spirit shown by friends and neighbours so far. However, it is always worth reminding everyone to look out for neighbours during these severe cold snaps. Unfortunately during the last few days several elderly persons have been rescued by the police, having fallen indoors and unable to raise the alarm themselves.”
He added: “If you have any concerns regarding a vulnerable neighbour and you are unable to make contact yourself please seek the assistance of your local Safer Neighbourhood policing team.”
Contact local Safer Neighbourhood policing teams on 0345 123 33 33. In emergencies you should always dial 999.
• Young people from Fairfield taking part in the Dreamscheme project helped staff from High Peak Community Housing clear footpaths and access roads to sheltered accommodation as well as outside older people’s bungalows every day during the snow.
Lia Roos, Chair of The Residents Of Fairfield Associaition said: “I am so proud of everyone who has taken part in the snow clearing and all of the hard work that they have done “
• Derbyshire County Council social care staff, including home helps and those working in residential care homes, walked long distances to get to work or get lifts with county council countryside rangers who again worked through the night to get them out to residents most in need.
This service was also supported by voluntary groups including Peak 4x4 Response, St John Ambulance and the Red Cross.
