MAJOR roadworks between Peak Forest and Sparrowpit are set to cause mayhem for motorists, a local councillor has claimed.
Sewer repairs are due to begin next month along the A623 Hernstone Lane, and are estimated to last for around five months.

During the work, 100-yard sections of the road will be closed, with traffic being controlled under a convoy system.

But Cllr Hilary Batterbee told Chapel-en-le-Frith Parish Council: "I enquired who, in their wisdom, had wanted these works to start in the autumn, and apparently the Peak Park (National Park Authority) said at any other time they would have disturbed tourism.

"It is just going to be absolute mayhem. Traffic is going to go over Peaslows, something I would never do in November or December when it is icy."
