CHAPEL CARNIVAL PREVIEW: Following in mum's footsteps
HISTORY is set to repeat itself with the new Carnival Queen for Chapel following in the footsteps of her mum - the town's carnival queen 30 years ago.
Taking centre stage at the Carnival celebrations on Saturday, June 14 will be Rachel Saxby whose mum Jeanette Saxby, nee Cohen, was queen in 1978.
She will be crowned in the Memorial Park after a colourful carnival with bands, carnival royalty, floats and fancy dress characters has wound its way through the streets of the town.
Parade route
Leaving Sheffield Road Industrial Estate at 1pm, the parade will go through Town End, along Market Street, Manchester Road, Long Lane and Rowton Grange Road before arriving at the Memorial Park.
Festivities continue in the park with a parade of queens, attractions, stalls, displays and fairground rides.
The new Queen will be joined by attendants Catherine Saxby and Helen Wilson, Junior Queen Charlotte Young, Princess Laura Tuckett, Rosebud Molly Tuckett and Petal Abigail Young.
Chairman of the Carnival Committee Caroline Gregory is keeping her fingers crossed that the sun shines and is urging all those who watch the parade to dig deep into their pockets and also to support all the events taking place throughout the week.
Collecting buckets will be available throughout the parade but the crowds who line the streets are urged not to throw coins.
