BELEAGUERED workers at Federal Mogul have been praised after their plant was short-listed for a Best Factory of the Year award.
Managers cited their commitment to the former Ferodo factory, which has seen jobs cuts and uncertainty in recent years.

But increased production and an improved response to changing markets have seen the plant able to compete more effectively in the market place, responding more swiftly to customers' needs and reducing the cost of production.

Waste reduction and segregation initiatives, together with returnable packaging programmes, have also reduced the plant's environmental impact.

"We are delighted to receive this nomination, and are keen to see our plant recognised for its hard work in ensuring that our performance improvement measures proved a success," said Peter Varnsverry, plant manager, Federal-Mogul.

"The increase in the plant's performance is a direct result of our pragmatic approach and collective effort to streamline our activities, together with a significant amount of company investment in tooling and automated processing equipment. We have begun our journey to become an example of a very lean and highly efficient manufacturer. A Best Factory Award would mean an independent stamp of approval and a great way to reward our team."

The committed workforce at the Chapel-en-le-Frith factory has been closely involved in enhancing the brake disc pad and lining plant's performance, with individual teams managing improvement activities in their respective areas.

A great deal of focus has been placed on training and ensuring that all employees have the right skills required for their job.

The Best Factory Awards have been in existence for nearly 20 years and are designed to recognise those who run the UK's manufacturing plants for their success and contribution to British manufacturing.

Federal-Mogul is one of 13 plants shortlisted to receive the prestigious award, organised by the Cranfield School of Management and Works Management magazine.

The winner will be announced in London tomorrow, Friday.
